The World Ends With You
Overview

"We should carry out the missions. I don't want to find out what happens if these timers hit zero. Do you?"
— Rhyme to Shiki

Raimu Bito (尾藤 来夢 Bitō Raimu), nicknamed Rhyme (ライム Raimu), is Beat's younger sister and also his partner during their first Reapers' Game in The World Ends with You.

Rhyme returns in NEO: The World Ends with You, as a talented hacker in the Realground who manages to hack the Underground's Reaper Networking Service in an attempt to find Beat after his disappearance.

Appearance[]

Rhyme is a young girl with short blonde hair and blue eyes.

In The World Ends with You, she wears a black beanie with a small skull patch on it. She wears a peach-colored long sleeved shirt with a black skull print shaped like a heart on the front. Rhyme's white "shorts" are apparently actually overalls that have fallen and hang loose below her waist, possibly showing her rebellious or unconventional side. She has black and yellow sneakers with white-colored laces. Around her neck is a pendant with a bell, which was a gift from her brother, and was at the time a big trend in Shibuya.

In NEO: The World Ends with You, she wears a peach and black-colored cap with a small silver crown symbol on it that has two white skulls on it, a peach-and-gray hooded jacket tied with a white ribbon below her neck, a white shirt with a grey imprint of a skull wearing a crown, black shorts, peach socks and yellow sneakers, with black laces instead of white. The ends of her hair are now slightly tousled.

Personality[]

"Rhyme's earnest and hard-working attitude proves a big help to Neku and Shiki early on, as well as to her partner, Beat. She has an addiction to adages and no shortage of smiles, and without her, the others would be lost."
— DS version game manual description
Rhyme - Alt Artwork

While Beat acts aggressive and impulsive, Rhyme balances him out with her calm demeanor. She is always wearing a smile and is kind to everyone she meets. Always optimistic and reasonable, Rhyme manages to keep everyone organized when she's around. Her young and pure heart gives her great love and loyalty.

Possibly due to her entry fee, she has no dreams except to help Beat achieve his (becoming the best skateboarder in the world), although she is unaware Beat's dream is simply a lie to motivate Rhyme to live again, because when in the Reapers' Game, Rhyme said, "Why come back to life if I've got nothing to live for?"

Beat describes her as someone who had everything figured out and big dreams before she entered the Game. She was supportive of Beat even when their parents weren't. She is friendly and cooperates with him right away after entering the UG despite not remembering who he is and really cared about her brother (both as a partner she considers to be a stranger and the sibling she remembers but cannot recognize as Beat.)

It is interesting to note that in the Japanese version, Rhyme refers to herself with "ボク" (boku), a masculine personal pronoun that is normally used by boys, occasionally used by tomboys, and sometimes used in song lyrics even when the singer is female.

In NEO, Rhyme has found a new dream for herself as a genius hacker and is shown to be extremely skilled and hard-working with computers, to the point that she manages to connect with the Reaper Networking Service despite being in the RG. She is shown to be very smart and collected, as she is the one who comes up with and organizes the plan to save the city, and acts reassuring towards the other characters.

Like with her brother, she seems to act as a calming presence to Kaie Ono, though in this case because he is much more nervous and less talkative than her. She hopes he can make his dream come true as well. She is also friendly and polite with the Wicked Twisters.

After the city is saved, she wants to relax after working so hard to find her brother (she spent all her waking hours looking for him after he disappeared and slept on her computer) and tells Beat to be less protective and strict with her. She appears confused when a guy tries to flirt with her.

Story[]

Background[]

Car crash

Rhyme and Beat seconds before their deaths.

When her brother Beat ran away from home after an argument with their parents, Rhyme soon followed him to the Miyashita Park Underpass. She tried to convince him to give their father another chance, saying their father would understand if Beat talked to him, but Beat replied he had nothing more to say to such a hard-headed old man. After Rhyme mentioned an adage, Beat shouted at her to be quiet and leave him alone. Suddenly, an out-of-control car speed in Rhyme's direction. Beat tried to save her by shoving her out of the way, but they were both hit by the car and killed.

Her memories and love of Beat were stated to be Beat's entry fee, though Beat first assumed it was Rhyme's instead, which comes as a shock to him. She does recall that she had a brother and worries about him, but cannot connect this to her partner, whom she believes to be a kind stranger. This fact tore Beat apart inside, so he resolved to win the Game and restore Rhyme's memories.

Week One[]

"It must be nice to have a dream--to be head over heels about something. I don't know what it's like."
— Rhyme to Shiki (Shiki, Day 4)
Beat opening

Beat rescuing his sister.

On their first day, Beat is seen in a full on sprint, presumably in order to find his sister before she gets erased. In the opening, Beat is seen saving Rhyme from some sort of Noise-induced explosion at the top of a building near AMX, but he catches her on his skateboard, and proceeds to flee from Noise while carrying her in his arms. Uzuki Yashiro and Koki Kariya are seen as well, implying they were responsible for summoning these Noise. Beat and Rhyme failed to reach 104 as the mission said, but as Neku and Shiki made it to complete the mission, their timers disappeared as well. They also met Harrier Reaper Uzuki Yashiro, who supposedly tried to trick them somehow, much like what happens to Neku and Shiki the following day.

Beat & rhyme

Beat and Rhyme erase the golden bat.

Beat and Rhyme met up with Neku and Shiki on the second day. Though they planned to team up, Neku's antisocial inclination combined with Beat's competitive spirit kept both teams separated. Nevertheless, both sets of Players developed a close bond and agreed to assist each other.

Later, on the third day, Rhyme and her brother completed the mission by erasing a small golden bat Noise that Neku and Shiki had missed due to being focused on defeating a larger, stronger one.

Shark attack

Rhyme saves Beat from a shark Noise which erases her.

On the fourth day, the mission became far simpler--a simple movement to another area with no time limit. Unfortunately, the ease of the mission was a ploy to lower the Players' guard and place a trap: a powerful, hidden shark Noise. Beat, while playing around, stepped on the shark's sigil, summoning it. Mirroring the way Beat had tried to save her before they died, Rhyme pushed her brother out of the way and was Erased instead, leaving only her favorite pendant.

Her lingering soul was bound to a pin by Sanae Hanekoma (a.k.a. Mr. H), from which her Noise could be summoned. This pin is obtainable in Beat, Day 7. From then on, returning Rhyme to normal becomes Beat's motivation for becoming a Reaper.

Week Three[]

Konishi and Rhyme

Noise Rhyme held captive by Konishi.

During week three, the Game Master Mitsuki Konishi transforms Rhyme back into a pin and uses it as Beat's entry fee. Konishi says she will return Rhyme to him if they complete her mission. Near the end of the week, Rhyme is summoned by Neku during their fight against Konishi, helping to save her brother even as a Noise.

Neku and friends

Rhyme returned to life with the group.

She came back to life at the end of the Game and was seen with Beat, Neku, and Shiki. Because Beat won, her memories and love for him were returned. As for her entry fee, the Secret Reports stated that since she had technically lost the Game, her entry fee was non-refundable.

She is the only known Player to have had both a human form and a Noise form. Reapers (notably the Game Masters) and Mr. H are the only others known to have this distinction.

A New Day[]

In A New Day, Rhyme was shopping with Beat when he was taken for Coco's Reapers' Game Expert Mode. Rhyme doesn't notice him disappear and when she notices he went missing, begins to panic. Within this Expert Mode, an illusionary version of Rhyme appears. Beat, however, finds this Rhyme suspiciously distant towards him. She tries to convince Beat that she is real by telling him what her dreams are (but Beat cannot confirm if she's telling the truth since the real Rhyme never told him her dreams). Eventually, this Rhyme sacrifices herself for him by pushing him out of the way of a Dissonance Shark, similarly to how the "real" Rhyme was erased.

After Neku and Beat escape Expert Mode, Beat calls the "real" Rhyme and they agree to meet back up to finish shopping.

This Day Ends with You![]

In the alternate reality of This Day Ends with You!, she and Beat were a stand-up comedy duo who performed at A-East. However, they broke things off because Beat had no confidence in his material and settled for the audience laughing at his panicked facial expressions. When he chose to take up Tin Pin instead, she joined the Black Skullers, hoping that getting rid of the distraction would help him focus on comedy again.

Rhyme gets herself in with the Kindred Spirits by claiming her pins were stolen by Koki Kariya, but ends up blowing her cover by asking Yodai Higashizawa for her pins back, even though she wasn't supposed to know they were working together. Her treachery works, however, and she steals and breaks Shuto Dan's Red Kaiser, leaving him forlorn. During the final showdown in Miyashita Park, Beat defeats her in a Tin Pin Slammer match, and they make up, with Rhyme laughing at Beat's joke about how "It takes curry flavor to curry my favor."

NEO: The World Ends with You[]

Sometime prior to NEO, Rhyme found a passion for hacking while searching for a new dream of her own.

Rhyme appears numerous times on a computer throughout Weeks 2 and 3, though she is not revealed in full until the last day of Week 3. Through hacking into the Reaper Networking Service while still being in the RG, she makes contact with Kaie Ono and is able to message Beat while he is in the UG. As much as Beat didn't want Rhyme to come to Shibuya or get involved with the Reapers' Game again, she comes to Dogenzaka to meet with Kaie in person while Coco/Uzuki escorted her there for her safety. Rhyme, along with Kaie, analyze the Noise created by Rindo's Replay ability and help the others to save Shibuya.

RhymePossessed

Rhyme possessed by Noise.

In Another Day, a disoriented Rhyme can be found at Dogenzaka possessed by Noise. She has the strongest Dive challenge in the game which consists of ten rounds against various Noise. After being freed, Rhyme mentions she is not sure what happened, but says she was attacked by a strange black thing before losing consciousness.

Noise form[]

Rhyme Noise Form SR

Rhyme's Noise form in battle

Pin 262

The Rhyme Pin

As a Noise, Rhyme appears to be a small, pink mammal, possibly a flying squirrel or sugar glider. Her fur is the same salmon pink color as the skull-and-crossbones shirt she had worn as a human. The signature sigil-like parts of her body are her arms, "wings," and tail, transitioning from a watermelon-like red to stark black.

She is integrated into Beat's conversation sprites for most of Week 2 and the beginning of Week 3, often perched on his shoulder or head. She seems to be attuned to Beat's emotions, often mimicking his posture or expressions during conversations. It is never made clear precisely how much of Rhyme's consciousness is active in her Noise form; regardless, Beat is extremely protective of her.

In battle as a pin, Rhyme will fly onto to tapped-on empty space to inflict damage on any enemies present nearby, then immediately glide offscreen.

Relationships[]

Beat[]

Rhyme is Beat's younger sister. Rhyme's memories and love for Beat were his entry fee for the Game, making Rhyme unaware that Beat was her older brother. However, she still trusts and is quite close to him. Given her willingness to even run away from home with him, it is evident that she was also very close to him prior to their deaths.

Neku[]

She is impressed by Neku's mastery of psychs, and is much more patient with him than Beat is during the first week. She quickly forms a friendship with Shiki and Neku, although she prioritizes her relationship with Beat (ditching Neku and Shiki during a conversation when Beat runs off). She also provides some intel about the Game to Neku and Shiki.

Shiki[]

RhymeShiki

Shiki asking Rhyme about her dreams.

Rhyme and Shiki quickly became friends, connecting over their partners' similarities and a conversation about Rhyme's pendant, as Shiki was enthusiastically surprised that she had the covetous pendant at all, given its rarity, but Rhyme expressed that she would've given Shiki it, had it not been a gift from her brother. Rhyme and Shiki figured out how to change trends according to Shiki on Shiki, Day 6. Shiki was very distraught over Rhyme's death, and berated Neku for not showing the same visible empathy for Rhyme and Beat.

Abilities[]

The World Ends With You[]

In first game, Rhyme is rarely shown fighting. The only known instance that Rhyme was shown in combat was on Week 1, Day 3, when she and Beat slashes at the smaller Vespertilio Canor to eliminate it. Anything further in the timeframe she was active in Week 1 with Beat was off screen.

The following is all of the Rhyme-related items that the player can get in The World Ends with You:

NEO: The World Ends With You[]

While Rhyme was in the RG and completely uninvolved in any combat during the second game, she has become an accomplished hacker during the 3 years since her return from their first game. After Beat's disappearance from the RG, she uses her skills to hack into the RNS and forms contact with Kaie, as well as being able to communicate with Beat despite him being in the UG.

The Animation[]

Rhyme's Psych Anime

Rhyme using her Psych in W1D3

In The Animation, Rhyme is given some more depth with her abilities in the UG and can be seen in Battle with Beat, Neku, and Shiki in her time in the game. In the Animation, Rhyme is capable of unleashing a green, Thunderbolt-like, energy beam. Noise that she hits with these are temporarily stunned in place and allows Beats to finish them off.

As a noise, Rhyme is capable of pulling Beat around and help accelerate his movement during Week 3. During the battle with Konishi, when Syncing up with Neku and Beat, Rhyme grows in size and is able to overpower Konishi as well as pull her Shadow from under her feet.

Etymology[]

The kanji of Rhyme's Japanese name, Rai-Mu Bi-Tou, translate literally as coming, dream, end, wisteria. This may be a reference to her hopefulness and tragic end. Her nickname, Rhyme, could be a reference to names of beings in the game being attuned to sound or music. It is also possible that Beat and Rhyme's nicknames together could be references to the major elements in rap music.

  • "Beat... I don't trust that pink-haired lady. Why she said doesn't add up. Let's take it with a grain of salt, OK?"
  • "We don't have time for mistakes, either. Slow and steady wins the race!"
  • "We don't have time for mistakes, either. Haste makes waste!"

Another Day[]

  • "I'd play you, but somebody took my pins. Hmm? No, I guy with a lollipop just ran by and nabbed them all. My whole collection... No use crying over spilled milk, I guess. "
  • "Sorry, Red. I'm just gonna borrow this. You can't slam without it, can you?" (before crushing Shooter's Red Kaiser)
  • "Friends? I'm a Black Skuller. Yup, I was a spy. Just trying to wear you down, you know?"
  • "That's right! Still waters run deep. I knew you were the sharp one, Pink."
  • " All you ever do is play Tin Pin. I got tired of nagging you to practice the routine."
  • "Face it, Beat. People don't laugh at your jokes. They laugh at you. You can! You could make stand-up history! I know it. That's why I won't pair up with you-- not until you realise your own potential."
  • "Ha ha ha! There, Beat, see? That was funny! Welcome to the world of intentional comedy."
  • "We're kind of on a break right now. Thought we might give Tin Pin a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!"
  • "Or just dim."

NEO: The World Ends with You[]

  • "...Still can't get through. But I know you're there. Once I figure out a way past this wall... ...I'm coming to save you."
  • "That sounds pretty wild... Are you sure you'll be okay? Huh, that's a new one. Lucky I managed to get through to you, then. Don't worry—I'll do everything I can to help. Information is the key to victory, and I've got that key right at my fingertips."
  • "Wow, that's rough. Guess you'll be stuck there a while longer. The weird goings-on in Shibuya are all over the news right now. Think you'll be okay? Should I join you? I mean, you're not wrong... But I'm still worried."
  • "Something's wrong with the city..."
  • "Of course not. This is no curse."
  • "What is this network for? Does it have something to do with Shibuya?"
  • "Gahhh, I'm not gonna make it at this rate! I've been comparing the data on Shinjuku with Shibuya's current state, but it still doesn't add up. Something must be missing..."
  • "... I have to go find out for myself. Seeing is believing, after all."
  • "I dunno if I would call what we've found "corrupted data" like he does. But whatever it is, there sure is a whole lot of it."
  • "I'm afraid so... And as it stands, we're sorely outnumbered."
  • "Well, Kaie and I are gonna try to brainstorm a way to get rid of some of the data. Two heads are better than one, after all. In the meantime, we'll need you to recruit as many people to help as you can. Well prepared is well armed, as they say."
  • "No, unfortunately. But I can kinda tell what he's saying from the look on your face. What a relief that you two managed to find each other. Once this is all over, we'll bring you back to life lickety-split."
  • "I know Shiki can't wait to see you, either. So you'd better not let her down, okay?"
  • "It's funny. I never thought I'd have a Reaper asking me for help!"
  • "If you say so! But still, you're full of surprises. You'd think a Reaper wouldn't be so eager to help my brother and his team. Let alone go so far as to stand up against the Game Master. Are you sure you want to do this?"
  • "That's one heck of a dream..."
  • "I'm glad. And I hope your dream comes true."
  • "So those lost Souls are the "corrupted data" we've identified, but if we can tap into the Souls that exist in this timeline, we should be able to use them to erase all that excess data."
  • "Exactly. So long as the affected Souls remain intact, we should be able to aid their recovery and get them to lend us their strength!"
  • "Let's see... We've got Fret and Nagi, then Neku... Beat can...well, he can provide backup."
  • "Exactly! Y'know, maybe this'll work after all. So, Rindo. If we combine all our powers together, I think we might just have a fighting chance here. I do! And I've dubbed this plan "Operation: Awakening"! Pretty cool, right?"
  • "Well, Neku uses his powers to sync up with everyone in Shibuya. Yep! Then, Nagi uses her powers to open their minds. And that's when you come in, Fret. You're gonna get them excited! By using your powers to remind people of the joy they've felt here in Shibuya. Right now, they've forgotten the thrill of life. But you're gonna help them all remember."
  • "Aren't you proud of me?"
  • "But see? I made it, safe and sound."
  • "I guess you're still in between worlds, while Neku's been completely confined to the UG."
  • "Okay. We should be fine, theoretically. But it's a lot of stress on Neku. I'm worried about him."
  • " C'mon—let me live a little, Beat! All study and no play makes Rhyme an overworked girl. Not to mention how worried I was when you disappeared. I spent all my waking hours trying to find you, and all my not-waking hours asleep at my PC. Don'tcha think I deserve to take a load off for once?"

Another Day[]

  • "Agh. My head's killing me... Looks like this isn't a dream at least." (thought before Dive)
  • "But where am I? What's happening? What's that black thing?" (Reduction 1)
  • "Whoa, that was close. Were they aiming for me?" (Reduction 2)
  • "Wait, I'm falling! Beat!" (Reduction 3)
  • "It's that black bird thing again." (Reduction 4)
  • "...Beat, don't you get it?" (Reduction 5)
  • "I was a spy this whole time." (Reduction 6)
  • "It's that black bird again..." (Reduction 7)
  • "Huh? I can fly..." (Reduction 8)
  • "Wait, am I a Noise?" (Reduction 9)
  • "I've gotta snap out of it! I'm not this much of a bird brain!" (Reduction 10)
  • "Huh? Was that all a dream?" (after Diving)
  • "I'm fine. Nothing to worry about! But what happened? There was this...black thing that attacked me, and then..."

Non-Canon appearances[]

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance[]

Rhyme Scan
"A girl who has been forced into the Reapers' Game. She has lost her memory but doesn't seem too worked up about it. She serves as Joshua's "Portal.""
— Rhyme's character file

Rhyme makes an appearance in Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. She appears in Sora's version of Traverse Town, missing most of her memories and lacking her partner Beat. When the Dream Eaters attack her, Joshua temporarily removes her from existence to save her.

She later reappears in Riku's version of Traverse Town, remembering everything about herself and helping Beat fight off weaker Dream Eaters to allow Riku the time needed to slay the Spellican.

Rhyme's voice actress is Ayana Taketatsu instead of Hitomi Nabatame in the Japanese version, and Ashley Rose instead of Kate Higgins in the English version.

"A devout and earnest girl with a perpetual smile on her face. Wherever Beat goes, she follows."
— Rhyme's description in The Animation's official website
Rhyme'sPsych

Rhyme fighting Noise in The Animation

Rhyme largely plays the same role she does in The Animation as she did in the original game. However, her psych is different. In the original game, she used a psych that appeared to be similar to Shockwave, while here she shoots a green energy beam from her hands. Her erasure is also changed to Day 6 instead of Day 4, likely so viewers could grow attached to her more. The Swing Shark also does not kill her instantly; instead, it launches Rhyme into the air before she is erased.

Trivia[]

  • Rhyme was originally intended to be a gender neutral boy who was Beat's friend instead of sibling. The staff mistook male Rhyme's concept art as a girl and were disappointed Rhyme was not a girl. Rhyme was also changed into a girl so the ratio of the five main players (boys and girls) would be 3:2 instead of 4:1.[2]
  • Like Eiru, Rhyme is described to have a "kind of non-gender specific or somewhere in the middle" look by the character designer Miki Yamashita.[3]
  • Rhyme's entry fee is never stated within the original game. However, it is revealed to be her dreams in The Animation.
    • In Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, she is also mentioned to have extraordinarily powerful dreams.
  • As a non-playable character, it is impossible to determine her associated brand from item bonuses. However, her pendant can be acquired from Sheep Heavenly.
  • Rhyme did not have her dreams returned to her after being revived at the end of the original game[4]. She develops a new dream in hacking by the point of NEO: The World Ends with You.
    • Interestingly, Beat expects her to have a dream in A New Day although he doesn't know what it is.
  • The NEO: The World Ends With You's Official Guidebook + Setting Documents Collection mentions Rhyme's age is 17 in NEO, which would make her 14 in the first game. Unlike the other main Players of The World Ends With You, Rhyme's age was never officially stated until the guidebook was released.
